If a UK university accepts the Duolingo English Test (DET), does that mean you can also use DET for your UK Student visa? The answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no.

๐Ÿ’ก The Duolingo English Test is not currently a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). However, some UK universities can still use DET when assessing the English proficiency of degree-level international students they sponsor.

That's an important distinction, and it explains why you can find major UK universities that accept DET even though Duolingo does not appear on the UK government's official list of approved SELT providers.

A recent case involving a University of Bristol scholarship student in Gaza has brought this issue into focus. The student reportedly has been unable to complete an online DET because of unreliable electricity, internet access and suitable testing conditions. Her situation raises a much broader question that international students should understand: If DET isn't a UKVI-approved SELT, how can UK universities accept it for students who need a visa?

Here's how it actually works.

๐Ÿ” Is the Duolingo English Test a UKVI-Approved SELT?

No. The UK government maintains an official list of Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) that can be used when an immigration route specifically requires an approved SELT. Current approved providers include the IELTS SELT Consortium, Pearson, LANGUAGECERT and PSI Services, with Trinity College London also approved for tests taken in the UK.

Duolingo is not currently on the approved provider list. You can verify the latest providers directly on the UK Government's official SELT page.

โš ๏ธ Don't confuse these two statements

โŒ โ€œDET is a UKVI-approved English test.โ€ That's not correct.

โœ… โ€œA UK university may accept DET when assessing the English proficiency of a degree-level international student it sponsors.โ€ That can be correct.

The difference between those statements is the key to understanding DET and UK Student visas.

๐ŸŽ“ How Can a UK University Accept DET If It Isn't a SELT?

International students studying at UK bachelor's degree level or above normally need to demonstrate English proficiency equivalent to CEFR B2 in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. The requirement appears in the UK Immigration Rules โ€” Appendix Student.

However, certain qualifying Higher Education Providers have another option. A Higher Education Provider with the required track record of compliance can use its own method to determine whether a degree-level student has reached B2 English. That means the university does not necessarily have to require one of the government's approved SELTs.

The university can assess the student's English using another method it considers appropriate and then record that assessment when issuing the student's Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). The Home Office explains this process in its official guidance for Student sponsors creating a CAS.

๐ŸŽฏ This is where DET can enter the picture: DET doesn't become a UKVI-approved SELT simply because a university accepts it. Instead, an eligible university may use the DET result as part of its own assessment that a student meets the required level of English.

๐Ÿค” So Can DET Be Used for a UK Student Visa?

Potentiallyโ€”but the wording matters.

DET itself isn't the UKVI visa test. Instead, an eligible university may accept your DET result as part of its own assessment of your English ability. The university can determine that you meet its English requirement, record its assessment when issuing your CAS, and you can then use that CAS as part of your Student visa application.

So saying โ€œUKVI accepts DET as a SELTโ€ would be misleading. A more accurate explanation is that some qualifying UK universities can accept DET and use their own English-language assessment when sponsoring degree-level international students.

That's a significant difference, particularly when you're deciding which English test to take.

๐Ÿ“„ What Is a CASโ€”and Why Does It Matter?

The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is an electronic record created by your university when it agrees to sponsor you for a UK Student visa. It contains important information about your course and your eligibility for sponsorship, and it can also tell UKVI how the university determined that you satisfied the English-language requirement.

Current Home Office guidance says that when an eligible Higher Education Provider assesses a student's English itself rather than relying on a SELT, it must record the assessment method and confirm that the student meets the necessary level. You can read the detailed government guidance at UK Government โ€” Assessing the English Language Requirement.

๐Ÿ’ก Ask the right question

Instead of simply asking, โ€œDoes the UK accept DET?โ€, ask: โ€œDoes my exact university and course accept DET, and can the university use my DET result when assessing my English for my CAS?โ€

That's the question that actually matters.

๐Ÿ“ฐ Why Is This Question in the News Now?

A recent situation involving a Palestinian scholarship student at the University of Bristol illustrates how complicated English testing and visa requirements can become in real life.

On September 24, 2026, Epigram, the University of Bristol's independent student newspaper, reported that Palestinian student Isra'a Abunssir was due to begin a Master's in Education at Bristol but had been unable to complete an English-language requirement needed before the university could sponsor her Student visa.

According to the report, the university allowed her to use the online Duolingo English Test rather than an in-person examination because of the exceptional circumstances. But taking an online test created another problem.

๐ŸŒ An Online English Test Still Requires the Right Environment

One of DET's biggest advantages is that students don't normally have to travel to a traditional testing center. You can take the test remotely, but remote testing does not mean the test can be taken from absolutely anywhere under any conditions.

According to the Epigram report, Abunssir said she could not guarantee continuous internet access, stable electricity or a sufficiently controlled environment to complete the examination from Gaza. You can read the original report at Epigram โ€” Gaza Scholar Evacuation Delayed Over English Test Requirement.

The University of Bristol told Epigram that applicants requiring a Student visa must meet Home Office English-language requirements and that the university cannot confirm admission when those requirements haven't been met. Bristol declined to discuss the details of the individual student's application.

๐Ÿ“Œ The larger lesson: DET removes the need to travel to a traditional testing center, but online testing still depends on electricity, internet connectivity, functioning equipment and a suitable testing environment.

โ“ Couldn't Bristol Simply Waive the English Requirement?

This is where the case becomes more nuanced. UK immigration rules still require relevant Student visa applicants to demonstrate the necessary English ability unless they qualify through another permitted route or exemption. You can see the requirements in the UK Immigration Rules โ€” Appendix Student.

However, qualifying Higher Education Providers have discretion over how they assess B2 English for degree-level students. They are not necessarily required to use a SELT.

Bristol's own published English-language policies also show that a standardized English test is not always the only possible form of evidence. Depending on an applicant's circumstances, Bristol may accept certain previous education completed in English, an English Medium of Instruction letter, an Ecctis English Language Proficiency Statement or other qualifying evidence. You can see examples in the University of Bristol's English Language Profile D requirements.

Bristol also explains that qualifications outside its normal validity period may sometimes be considered where there is satisfactory evidence that the applicant has continued using English.

โš ๏ธ What we can't conclude

The complete details of Abunssir's application are not public. We therefore cannot conclude that Bristol could simply waive the requirement or that another particular form of assessment must legally be accepted.

The broader lesson for DET students is simpler: UKVI's English requirement and a university's chosen method of demonstrating that you satisfy that requirement are not necessarily the same thing.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง Do UK Universities Accept DET?

Yes. A number of UK universities accept the Duolingo English Test for at least some programs. Duolingo currently identifies UK engineering opportunities at institutions including Imperial College London, Southampton, Bath, Loughborough, Warwick, Cranfield, Strathclyde, Durham, Queen's University Belfast, Heriot-Watt, Surrey and Newcastle. You can see Duolingo's guide to UK engineering programs accepting the Duolingo English Test.

But university-level acceptance should always be treated as the beginning of your research rather than the final answer. A university may accept DET for one degree but not another, for graduate admission but not a pathway program, or for standard admission but not a particular pre-sessional route.

๐Ÿšจ Don't assume that because a university appears on a DET acceptance list, every program at that university accepts DET.

Excelling in the Duolingo English Test Through Better Practice

๐Ÿ”Ž What Should You Check Before Taking DET for the UK?

There are three questions worth answering before you pay for the test. First, does your university accept DET? Check its current official English-language requirements rather than relying entirely on a third-party list. Second, does your exact course accept DET? University-wide acceptance doesn't always apply to every program. Third, if you'll need Student visa sponsorship, can the university use your DET result when assessing your English and issuing your CAS?

If the university's website doesn't make the third point clear, contact international admissions directly.

๐Ÿ’ฌ A useful question to send your university: โ€œI require Student visa sponsorship. If I meet this program's Duolingo English Test requirement, can that DET result be used to satisfy the English-language requirement when you issue my CAS?โ€

Getting that answer before taking the test could prevent you from paying for an English examination that doesn't work for your particular admission route.

โš ๏ธ When Might You Actually Need a SELT?

The flexibility described above is especially relevant to students studying at degree level or above with qualifying Higher Education Providers. Different rules can apply to students studying below degree level and to certain foundation, pathway or pre-sessional English courses.

For example, Home Office guidance generally requires students studying below degree level to demonstrate at least CEFR B1 through an approved SELT unless another permitted exception applies. You can review the government's Student sponsor guidance and sponsorship duties.

This means you shouldn't assume that because a university accepts DET for master's students, DET will automatically work for its foundation program. Always check the specific program and admission route.

๐Ÿ“Š Don't Forget About DET Subscores

There's another issue UK applicants increasingly need to watch: a university may require more than an overall DET score.

For example, imagine that your course requires 125 overall with at least 120 in Writing. If you receive 130 overall but only 115 in Writing, you could still fall below the published English requirement despite having an overall score well above 125.

The same principle can apply to Speaking, Reading and Listening. That's why your target shouldn't simply be โ€œDET 125.โ€ Your real target should include the overall score and every individual skill minimum published by your course.

๐ŸŽฏ Always check both the overall DET requirement and any minimum Speaking, Writing, Reading or Listening scores.

๐Ÿ  What Does the Bristol Case Teach Us About At-Home Testing?

DET's remote format removes a major obstacle for international students because they don't normally have to travel to a physical testing center. That's a significant advantage, particularly for students who live far from traditional test centers.

But the Bristol case demonstrates that remote testing still depends on infrastructure. Students need reliable electricity and internet connectivity, functioning equipment and a suitable environment where the test's security requirements can be followed. Current DET procedures also require a phone camera to provide a secondary view during the test. You can review the official DET test structure and setup information here.

For most test takers, the practical lesson is to make the testing environment as predictable as possible. Check your internet before test day, charge your computer and phone, prepare the secondary camera correctly, remove unnecessary devices, make sure nobody will enter the room, turn off notifications and complete the official equipment and system checks. It's also useful to practice under similar conditions beforehand so the real testing environment doesn't feel unfamiliar.

The more predictable your environment is, the less likely an avoidable technical or security issue will interfere with your test. In areas experiencing war, prolonged power outages or severe internet disruption, however, these requirements can become much more substantial barriers.

๐Ÿ’ก Online testing improves accessibility, but online doesn't automatically mean accessible under every circumstance.

๐Ÿš€ Preparing for a UK University's DET Requirement

Once your university confirms that DET is accepted, don't prepare for a generic score. Prepare for your university's actual requirement.

If your program requires 125 overall, 120 Writing, 120 Speaking, 115 Reading and 115 Listening, then all five numbers should guide your preparation. If Writing is consistently your weakest skill, targeted Writing practice may be more useful than repeatedly completing entire mock tests. The same principle applies to Speaking, Reading and Listening.

DET Study offers practice across DET question types, including targeted skill practice and AI feedback that can help identify where you're losing points. The goal shouldn't simply be โ€œget a good DET score.โ€ It should be โ€œget the exact DET scores my university requires.โ€ ๐ŸŽฏ

โœ… Bottom Line

The most important thing to remember is that the Duolingo English Test is not currently a UKVI-approved SELT. You can confirm the current providers on the UK Government's official SELT list.

But that does not mean international students can never use DET when applying for a UK Student visa. For degree-level study, qualifying Higher Education Providers can use their own method to determine whether students have reached the required CEFR B2 level in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. The university can then record its assessment method when issuing the student's CAS.

So don't ask only โ€œDoes the UK accept DET?โ€ Ask: โ€œDoes my exact university and course accept DET, and can the university use my DET result when issuing my CAS?โ€

๐Ÿ’ก
That small change in wording can prevent a very expensive misunderstanding.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Duolingo English Test accepted for a UK Student visa?

DET is not itself a UKVI-approved SELT. However, qualifying Higher Education Providers can assess the English proficiency of degree-level students themselves. A university may therefore accept DET as part of its own English assessment and record its assessment method on the student's CAS.

Is DET a UKVI-approved English test?

No. Duolingo is not currently included on the UK government's list of approved SELT providers. Check the latest UK Government SELT list before making a testing decision.

Do UK universities accept the Duolingo English Test?

Yes. A number of UK universities accept DET for at least some programs. However, acceptance can differ by university, course, degree level and admission route. Always check your specific program.

If my university accepts DET, does that guarantee I can use it for my visa?

Don't assume so. Confirm with the university that your DET result can be used when it assesses your English proficiency and issues your CAS for Student visa sponsorship.

What English level is required for a UK Student visa?

For degree-level study, the normal requirement is CEFR B2 in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Different requirements can apply to study below degree level.

What is a SELT?

SELT stands for Secure English Language Test. These are specific English examinations approved by the UK government for immigration purposes. DET is not currently an approved SELT.

What is a CAS?

CAS means Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. It is the electronic sponsorship record issued by a UK educational institution and used as part of a Student visa application.

Can a UK university assess my English without IELTS?

In some circumstances, yes. Qualifying Higher Education Providers can assess degree-level students' English themselves. The method depends on the university and the applicant's circumstances, so students should check directly with their institution.

Should I take DET or IELTS for a UK university?

Start with the requirements of your specific university and course. If DET is explicitly accepted and the university confirms it works for your admission and CAS circumstances, DET may be an option. If your route specifically requires a UKVI-approved SELT, you'll need an approved test instead.

Can I use DET for a UK foundation or pathway program?

Don't assume that you can. Different English-language rules can apply below degree level and to some foundation, pathway and pre-sessional programs. Check the requirements of the exact course before taking DET.

Does getting the required overall DET score guarantee admission?

Not necessarily. Universities may also require minimum Speaking, Writing, Reading or Listening scores, and meeting the English requirement is only one part of the overall admissions process.
